Keep Your Leather Goods Looking Their Best

At Grimbeard Leather, we are committed to providing you with top-quality leather goods that will last a thousand campaigns. Leather is a natural product. It's skin and will stretch, stain, and get sun-tanned if left in direct light. We embrace the natural wear and tear as it gives our products character.

We prefer the worn, beat-up look, so we don't generally do much for maintenance beyond the essentials. This approach allows the leather to age gracefully, enhancing its unique appearance over time. However, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Maintaining your leather goods is simple. Regularly wipe down your items with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and surface dirt. Every 6-12 months, apply a leather conditioner to keep the leather supple and prevent cracking. Bic 4 and Saddle Soap are the ones we use the most. You can grab these locally at farm supply and craft stores, or find them online. Make sure you test the product out on a small, inconspicuous area, before using it on the entire surface.

Keep the leather dry and don't store it in airtight bags or containers. This will prevent moisture buildup and potential mold growth. Additionally, keep the leather away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the finish from cracking and peeling. This also helps keep it from fading and drying out.

Avoid overloading bags and backpacks to maintain their structure and appearance over time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. How often should I condition my leather goods?

It's recommended to condition your leather items every 6-12 months, depending on usage and environmental factors. Regular conditioning helps maintain the leather's natural oils and prevents drying and cracking. If you are in a dry climate, it may require more conditioning. We are based in Missouri, which is humid, and can go years sometimes without using it.

2. Can I use household cleaners on my leather products?

No, household cleaners will damage leather. Always use products specifically designed for leather care to ensure the longevity and appearance of your items.

3. How do I remove a stain from my leather item?

First, gently blot the stain with a dry cloth to absorb as much as possible. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain or damage the leather. Use a leather cleaner for more persistent stains, following the product instructions carefully. Generally, though, you won't remove the stain. We consider it character.

4. What should I do if my leather gets wet?

If your leather item gets wet, allow it to air dry naturally away from direct heat sources. Once dry, apply a leather conditioner to restore moisture and prevent stiffness. Sometimes it will discolor, but not always.

5. Is it okay to store leather items in direct sunlight?

No, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the leather to fade, sunburn, and dry out. Store leather items in a cool, shaded area to preserve their color and flexibility.
